Team S’pore leaves for WCG grand finals

Singapore’s World Cyber Games representatives have left for Chengdu, China to take part in the WCG Grand Finals. They will be overseas until the international esports tournament concludes this Sunday.

The team members bade their farewells to their loved ones at Changi Airport yesterday evening. They will be flying to China via Kuala Lumpur and are expected to arrive in China on Wednesday. Officials from Rapture Gaming, the organizers of WCG Singapore, will be accompanying the team.

The Straits Times had previously reported that the WCG Singapore winners were having problems raising the necessary funds for the flight, accomodation and living expenses in China, but understands that Rapture Gaming had stepped in to make arrangements for those expenses to be sponsored.

Of the members which spoke to, Jared “slyfoxlover” Beins and William “Ayane06” Ten, playing Asphalt 4 and Wise Star 2 respectively, were most confident of securing a medal at the Grand Finals. slyfoxlover was last year’s gold medalist for Asphalt 4, while Ayane06 will only be facing four other competitors in Wise Star 2.

Wilson “Tetra” Chia, felt that his chances in Virtua Fighter 5 were slim as he has been out of practice and was seeded into a difficult group containing some of the strongest VF5 players in the world, including finalists from last year’s Grand Finals.

Likewise, Marcus “Revenant” Tan, Singapore’s WarCraft III representative, felt that he was not likely to proceed from the group stage. Participating in an international live tournament for the first time, Revenant will be facing an extremely tough group, including last year’s bronze medalist and other veterans from 2008’s tournament.

Members of Counter-Strike 1.6 team AEON.gameSENSE told that their group would be exciting to watch and were optimistic of their chances for proceeding to the elimination stage. did not get a chance to speak with the other players on the team.
