Gamers have been criticizing the Games Xtreme League over the recently announced selection of games for the upcoming 2007 GXL Season 2, saying that the polling the community was a sham.
Counter-Strike 1.6 was selected despite Counter-Strike: Source winning out, albeit by just one vote (161 to 160). Worst was the inclusion of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars over Battlefield 2142, despite winning the polls 103 to 22. GXL’s Game Master Andrei Dmitriev hinted that internal management policies resulted in some of the game selections. “GXL, just like any other competition decides the games on a number of factors. Some are very obvious to everyone and some are only known to organizers,” said Andrei.
Perhaps the most telling sign of upper management interference is the inclusion of a Granado Espada PVP competition, despite only receiving 24 votes. The Singapore distributor for GE is EpicSoft, which is owned by Playworks, the organizer of GXL.
CSS team XtC’s Michael “XtReMiSt” Phee said that his team was “disappointed” with the games selection. “What’s the point of asking gamers to vote? Its like a waste of time.”
XtReMiSt conceded that the CS 1.6 community is much larger than CSS, but felt that picking CS 1.6 for a commemorative season was “not justified”.
The only game which was not disputed was DotA Allstars, which received the third highest number of votes after CSS and CS 1.6. Forum user scafT even gave his support for DotA, a rare occurance amongst the GXL community. He wrote, “It deserves to be chosen because the community is up there and striving.”
