It appears that the World Cyber Games Asian Championship will be held in Singapore for the third year running, contrary to rumours that the Asia Pacific event would be moving to either Malaysia or Thailand.
The official dates and venue of the WCG Singapore National Final were recently released on the WCG Singapore website. With that, two strong indicators have emerged that point towards Singapore as the location of the 2008 WCG Asian Championship.
Firstly, the official dates for the Singapore National Final are 7 to 10 August 2008, or from Thursday to Sunday. This is consistent with the previous two years Singapore played host to the Asian Championship – the Singapore National Final were held on Thursday and Friday, while the bigger ticket Asian Championship took place over Saturday and Sunday.
Secondly, the venue indicates a much larger event than just a National Final event. The official venue for this year’s Singapore National Final will be at Suntec Exhibition and Convention Centre Halls 402 and 403. The previous two years, the Singapore National Final and Asian Championship also occupied two halls.
Furthermore, the last time the Singapore National Final was held as a stand alone event was in 2005. That was when the event occupied only a single hall, Hall 401, at the Suntec Singapore Convention Centre.
Previously, there was talk of the Asian Championship being moved to Malaysia or Thailand. However, with the official dates and venue for the Singapore National Final released and a little thought into the matter, it now appears that these rumours have been squashed.
Singapore will likely play host to the WCG Asian Championship in 2008.
