TF2 update and Scout class pack confirmed

Players will now be able to destroy the Demoman’s stickybombs by shooting at them, as part of a significant Team Fortress 2 update released yesterday. Separately, a Scout class pack has also been confirmed as the next major content pack by TF2 developer Robin Walker, along with other major technical updates for the game.

In addition to allowing weapons that fire bullets to break apart the Demoman’s stickybombs, the patch also makes the Engineer’s dispenser and teleporter upgradeable and adds the ability for the Spy to regenerate his cloaking ability by picking up ammo from the ground or from health cabinets.

According to Kenneth “Neth” Tan, a scrim player with 5th Company, these changes are expected to drastically change both pub play and scrim matches, citing the reduced firepower and ability for the Demoman to hold down chokepoints and expected increase in importance of Engineers.

Separately, in a post on the TF2 blog, Valve developer Robin Walker wrote that the Scout class pack will focus on giving the Scout tools that will make him more useful in the Dustbowl and Goldrush maps. Walker also announced that performance improvements introduced in Left 4 Dead would be implemented in TF2, while the Xbox 360 will get a major content update which includes all PC content updates in the past year.

The full patch details are copied below:

  • The Engineer’s teleporters can now be upgraded to level three. It will recharge faster the higher level it is
  • The Engineer’s dispensers can now be upgraded to level three. It will give out metal and heal faster as it is upgraded
  • Spies will be able to recharge their cloaking ability by picking up ammo off of the ground or from health cabinets
  • Some changes to the second part of the first stage of Goldrush to give the attackers more of an advantage
  • Any weapons that fire bullets (shotguns, sniper’s machine gun, heavy’s minigun, etc.) can now break apart the Demoman’s stickybombs
  • The icon on the HUD for a person calling for Medic will now give more information to the medic (if the target is low on health, on fire, etc.)
  • Added an achievement tracker that will allow people to choose specific achievements that they are trying to get
  • There is now a custom icon for death messages when the player was killed from a critical hit
  • Added a new particle effect for when a player enters the water
  • Added smoke to the feet of a rocket jumping soldier
  • Players will now have some particles swirling around them so other players can see when they are overhealed
