WCG Asian Championship groups draw and analysis

The groups for the 14 countries participating in the World Cyber Games 2009 Asian Championship were drawn yesterday. GameSync does some light analysis of what spectators and fans can expect at this year’s tournament.

The groups for DotA Allstars look very well distributed, with regional powerhouses Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore all placed into separate groups. It seems quite likely that all three nations will go proceed to the elimination stage, which can only result in an exciting finals for DotA fans.

In FIFA, Group A is the closest we have to a “group of death” situation, with FIFA powerhouses India and Malaysia present. If bbreak17 is once again representing India, we can expect him to give a tough fight to Malaysia’s [T2.W|nDs]Lo0n4tic. One interesting thing to note is that Singapore is no longer represented by any of the veteran FIFA players, so it’s no longer certain that the country will proceed to the elimination stage, especially with the threat of China and Philippines looming in Group C.

It’s really anybody’s game in Guitar Hero World Tour, but Group B is definitely the group to watch. All of last year’s Asian Championship podium finishers are there – New Zealand (1st), Philippines (2nd) and New Zealand (3rd). It’s really anybody’s game though, as the Guitar Hero series hasn’t had much history behind it yet, but judging from the GHWT competition at the recent Video Games Live, the game itself is much better for the spectators and should be exciting to watch.

Correct me if im wrong, i know nuts about wcg.

So that means the Asian championship is held in Singapore, is it every year that all the other teams have to fly here (or be flown here) in order to compete in the finals?

Then wassup with the one in Cheng Du being the Grand Finals?

    I’m confused :(

  • SG_Lancelot

Singapore World Cyber Games National Finals (Only for Singaporeans) > Asian Championships (For winner of Singapore WCG Nat Finals to represent Singapore, while competing with other Asian countries’ representative)

And yes you are right, teams have to fly to Singapore to compete, most of them have sponsorship from their own WCG committee

Grand Finals does not have Dota in its lineup of games.

WCG National Finals > ACG [compete on an Asian Level]
WCG National Finals > Grand Finals [National Finals winner wins the right to represent Singapore at Grand Finals]

  • DomeJr

Oh I see.. so the Open Category is a dead-end at the National Finals here?

  • SG_Lancelot

    yes u are right.
