It was a night of fun, community and intense action as over 320 gamers and spectators gathered at E2Max Cineleisure Friday night to participate in the first round of the inaugural Halo 3 deathmatch tournament in Singapore.

Two stage emcees were on hand to provide commentary on both live matches as well as show highlights. The gathered crowd cheered wildly as well-placed rockets and perfectly aimed shots were played back in slow motion on the projector screen, made possible by Halo 3’s match recording feature.

One of those competiting in the tournament is Jasper Mah, a student advisor of Gaming.RP. Jasper is a veteran Halo player, having partcipated in the 2005 World Cyber Games Singapore Finals Halo 2 tournament, and says that Halo 3 is the best yet for multiplayer potential.

“There are more weapons, more vehicles, introducing new gameplay elements,” explained Jasper. “Best of all, the free for all player limit has been raised from 8 to 16, resulting in more action.”

Brennan Foo, 12, was one of the younger participants present at the tournament. Brennan was excited at being able to participate in this event as he was unable to attend previous events as he had to prepare for PSLE.

Brennan’s father, 50 year-old IT professional David Foo, accompanied his son to the competition and was even very supportive. “It’s a good outlet for him to relieve stress after his exams,” said Mr Foo. “I encourage him to take it more seriously as he will get to pit his skills against others.”

While most were here to participate, some came just to spectate and to soak in the atmosphere.

“I’m just here to take a look and experience the community,” said Tan Yong Yuen. The 18 year-old student from Republic Polytechnic said that he had was not confident enough yet to take part in this tournament. However, he hoped to train up and be ready by the time the 2007 Games Xtreme League Season 02, which will be featuring Halo 3, comes around.

For those who wish to catch the finals of the tournament, they will be taking place this Sunday from 3pm onwards at E2Max Cineleisure, with the prize presentation to take place some time after 5pm.
