Singapore’s Leslie Cheong placed second in the Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition tournament at the Canada Cup 2011 fighting games tournament in Calgary, Alberta after losing to Japan’s Kazunoko 0-3 in the grand finals.
Leslie (Sagat), who had already lost once to Kazunoko (Yun) in the winners’ brackets finals, could not find any answer to the top-ranked Japanese player’s high-pressure rushdown play. Kazunoko steamrolled Leslie 2-0, 2-0, 2-1, with the Singapore player taking a consolation point in the final set by a double knockout in the only close round of the series.
The grand final did not do justice to Leslie’s run at Canada Cup 2011, which included a remarkable 2-0 (2-1, 2-1) win over Japan’s Mago (Fei Long) in the winners’ brackets semi-finals and a thrilling 2-1 (1-2, 2-0, 2-1) win over USA’s Wolfkrone (C.Viper) in the losers’ brackets finals.
Leslie wins US$400 (S$520) for placing second, while Kazunoko received US$1,400 (S$1,820) for placing first and Wolfkrone US$200 (S$260) for placing third.
Kun-Xian “Xian” Ho also took part in the tournament, but finished in the top 20 after being eliminated earlier in the tournament by Japan’s Tokido.
