Na`Vi are champions, win US$1m at Dota 2 Gamescom tournament

Dota 2

Ukrainian Dota team Na`Vi defeated Chinese team EHOME in the grand finals of the International Dota 2 Championships at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany last night (Singapore time) and took home US$1 million (S$1.2 million) in what must be the largest single prize award given out for an esports tournament in recent memory.

Going into the finals having not lost a single game and impressing spectators with their aggressive play and solid teamwork, Na`Vi looked like the sure favourite to win. While a first game loss to EHOME looked like an upset in the making, Na`Vi quickly dispelled that notion, coming back to win two straight games with commanding leads.

As Na`Vi came into the grand finals from the winners bracket, they had a one match advantage. Those two wins were all they needed to win the best-of-five series, and with that the US$1 million in prize money. EHOME walked away with US$250,000 (S$300,000).

Singaporean team Scythe.SG were earlier knocked out of the competition in the losers bracket finals by EHOME, netting Scythe.SG US$150,000 (S$180,000) for the third place finish.

The final standings and winnings were:

  • 1st: Na`Vi (US$1,000,000)
  • 2nd: EHOME (US$250,000)
  • 3rd: Scythe.SG (US$150,000)
  • 4th: MYM (US$80,000)
  • 5th: iG and m5 (US$35,000 each)
  • 7th: Mith-Trust and ok.nv.int (US$25,000 each)
