Valve will showcase Dota 2 to the public for the first time, with a US$1 million prize pool tournament to be held 17th – 21 August at the Gamescom expo in Cologne, Germany.

The invite-only tournament — named “The International” — will feature 16 teams from around the world, including Scythe.SG from Singapore, MUFC from Malaysia and Mineski.Infinity from the Philippines.

Gabe Newell, president and founder of Valve, revealed that the teams had access to Dota 2 and have prepared for the tournament for a while now: “I have had the good fortune to watch the competitors as they prepare for the tournament, and the level of play is extraordinary.”

According to the Dota 2 blog, the tournament will be broadcast in four languages (Chinese, German, Russian, and English) free of charge.

No specifics about the prize breakdown or further information about the tournament broadcast are available.
