Think it’s finally time to put away your copy of GTAIV and Episodes from Liberty City but still craving for more open-world games? Then look forward to Red Dead Redemption next year on the Xbox 360 and PS3, as Rockstar Games announces a release date of 30 April 2010.
As a successor to 2004’s Red Dead Revolver, the game will still be set in the Wild West but roughly 50 years after at the turn of the 20th century. You play as John Marston, a reformed outlaw blackmailed by the government and in search of his former gang members. All this while, you’ll be traversing through three locales – two set in the sprawling American West and one in Northern Mexico.
One of the distinct features to this open-world environment is an “ecology” system, which generates a variety of wildlife – from snakes to frickin’ bears – as you explore the world. It has also been revealed that there will be hundreds of procedural events; random instances such as bandits ambushing a coach and you have the choice of being a rescuer or to just walk on by.
As seen in the typical Western shows, Wanted posters are aplenty and this serves as side missions during the game. Taking on missions will help boost your honour among the townsfolk, and not only that, your reactions to dynamic situations throughout your exploration will reflect how vile or admired your character will be.
So how about it? Will it be as good as GTAIV or even better, or even something entirely different? Hopefully a demo will be out before release so we’ll know for ourselves.
