Scythe.SG are now one of the most successful gaming teams in Singapore gaming history, having won US$150,000 (S$180,000) by placing third at the International Dota 2 Championships in Cologne, Germany this evening (Singapore time).
The sole Singapore representatives at the invite-only tournament were eliminated 2-1 by EHOME from China in the best of three losers bracket finals. Scythe.SG took the first game convincingly with a gank-and-push strategy supported by late game carry hero Anti-Mage, but poor hero choices in the next two games contributed to decisive losses against EHOME, leading to Scythe.SG’s exit from the tournament.
Scythe.SG had a good showing in the tournament. They defeated nevo from Denmark and GosuGamers.net from Europe, losing only to Na`Vi from Ukraine in the group stage. Placing second in their group, Scythe.SG were seeded into the winners brackets in the double-elimination playoff. They then went on to defeat MYM from Denmark and EHOME, but eventually lost to Na`Vi 2-0 again, sending them to the lower bracket finals where they lost to EHOME.
The US$150,000 prize money Scythe.SG took home from this tournament place them definitively ahead of any other gaming team by prize money in Singapore history, pulling far ahead of two other top earners: one of their predecessor teams, Zenith — who took home US$13,000 as the DotA champions at the ESWC World Finals in 2008 — and now-defunct professional team Singapore Sword — who took home US$30,000 by placing in the top 8 of the Championship Gaming Series World Final.
